As a Short Term Rental Safety Inspector (STRSI) for vacation homes, TheseKeys will work with you to ensure your home is providing a safe and secure environment your guests can count on.

As an added bonus, home owners that complete the annual commitment to safety certification may be eligible for reduced insurance costs (check with your insurance agent). Not only is a safe home a difference maker for your guests, you'll also be reducing your possible liability.

It's not just about avoiding injury - a certified home is less likely to have issues that cause revenue loss by being off the market while repairs and investigations are completed.

How many vacation homes don't have;
Smoke Alarms - 20%
Carbon Monoxide Detectors - 43%
Fire Extinguishers - 58%

These stats don't include the homes that have alarms but aren't working or are in the wrong places/don't have enough

80% of all accidents in vacation homes are trips and falls

While a working smoke alarm is the single most important item you can provide your guests, a safe home is much more than just that. Trips and falls can be greatly reduced by looking for the most common areas of concern

Safety Inspection

A home that is Commitment to Safety Certified is a home that is more marketable and in demand. Guests want to know that their safety is not an after thought and your commitment shows that.

Start your next vacation rental off on a safe foot

Covid-19 - During these difficult times it is more imperative than ever that your vacation property is cleaned and sanitized properly. AirBnb and other sites have specific rules pertaining to the cleaning process for homes. You can rest easy knowing that TheseKeys will ensure all the mandatory steps and process are followed. Providing a safe environment for your guests is our first priority.
A lot of guests are surprised to learn there is virtually no regulation when it comes to vacation home safety. Unlike hotels, resorts, cruise ships and the like, there is no governing body ensuring the home has a working smoke detectors, electrical outlets are safe, decks are in good condition and not at risk of collapse.
Booking a TheseKeys vacation rental home means you're booking a home for your family that is Commitment to Safety certified. While no home can ever be 100% accident proof, a Certified Commitment to Safety home has been inspected annually for 76 points to ensure your well being.
Whenever you rent a home be sure to ask the owner/manager about their commitment to safety. Some points to bring up are listed below

Fire and CO Prevention
A smoke alarm with a dead battery obviously doesn't do much good. Just as important though is the location and number of working smoke alarms. Are they interconnected (if an alarm goes off on the ground floor, will it trigger the upstairs ones)? Carbon Monoxide (CO) is an odourless gas that can kill - without a proper CO monitor you can be at risk. Fire extinguisher need to be right type (ABC) and serviced properly. If you can't find it, you can't use it.

Poisons
Cleaning products under the sink, paint thinner in a utility closet, insect poison on the floor. All sorts of items harmful to curious children can be found in a vacation home. Make sure there is no easy access to chemicals and poisons that can harm children during your stay.

Stairs & Decks
Decks and stairs are the home of the bulk of significant injuries at vacation rentals. Stairs without any or with improper handrails, decks not secured safely to homes, railings that provide an opportunity for children to hurt themselves. Did you know stairs 36" and higher should have handrails and decks only 24" off the ground should have railings? It doesn't take a big fall to cause a big injury.

Insurance
Even the safest of homes can have accidents. If something were to happen to someone in your family, does the home owner have proper insurance to protect you for damage? Medical bills? Loss of income? Check that the home you're renting is insured properly as a Short Term Rental so that in the event of an accident you can focus on getting back up to speed instead of chasing proper compensation.

Pools & Hot Tubs
Pools and Hot Tubs bring some of the most relaxing moments to any vacation. They can also be some of the most dangerous places for children. Hot tubs should have a cover with a lock to prevent small children from unsupervised access. They should also never be set higher than 104°F. Pools should be gated and uneasy for a child to enter. Both areas should be properly cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis.

Fireplace & Wood Stoves
Did you know wood burning chimney's/stoves should be both cleaned and inspected on an annual basis? Smoke contains creosote which builds up on chimney walls and is highly combustible. Every year in the US there are 25,000 chimney fires. Some home owners neglect to have their chimney's, either out of forgetfulness or trying to save money. Find out when the last time the home you're renting had it's chimney serviced.

See the difference working smoke alarms and closed doors can make for your family's safety
